Lexington Public Schools Green Teams

LPS Food Recovery Pilot Underway!

Diamond Middle School is serving as a pilot for the town’s new Food Recovery program. With the wonderful support of the Lexington Health Department and Whitson’s Food Service, unsold and unopened food from the cafeteria is being diverted to those with food insecurity by our partner, FoodLink. To read more about it, check out the Lexington Green Teams website. If all goes smoothly, the program will be rolled out to all schools in the district soon.

Voices on the Green: Hosted by Lexington's First Parish Unitarian Church

The area's premier live performance series featuring personal stories, popular songs, an expert speech and poetry.

“Timing is Everything” Crisis of Climate Change

Friday, February 7th, 7:00- 8:30pm (Doors open 6:30pm)
First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church
7 Harrington Road, Lexington Green
781-862-8200
Tickets: $20 Donor, $10 General, $5 Young Adult/Children
Seating is limited; timing is everything(!) Reserve tickets online

Expert speaker: Dr. Robert Armstrong, head of the energy initiative at MIT and international expert on energy and climate. His TED-type talk will concentrate on understanding the "timing is everything" crisis of climate change.

The evening's stories and songs will not necessarily be about the climate crisis, but all will be about aspects of our lives in which "Timing is Everything." The organizers of Voices on the Green agree one of the most globally critical stories is the climate crisis. They will generously share funds raised from the evening with Lexington Global Warming Action Coalition (LexGWAC) and LEXINGTON SUNRISE. Both groups will have a chance to speak at the event as well as engage in further discussion during intermission.

LexGWAC will use funds raised to purchase books and movies about climate change to be made available to the public.

LEXINGTON SUNRISE, a youth-led climate group and chapter of the national SUNRISE movement, grew out of the incredibly successful climate strike some of these high schoolers organized. 1000 people attended the strike held on Lexington High's football field on September 20th as part of a Global Climate Strike. From this work the students formed LEXINGTON SUNRISE which advocates for legislation that empowers youth, saves our climate and creates a just society.

Refreshments will be provided by FoodLink, a community organization based in Arlington that rescues fresh food, alleviates hunger, and contributes to environmental sustainability.

Climate Change and Energy Evolution: Will Team Humanity Step Up to Save the Planet?

O.W.L.L. Course at Lexington Community Center

Course Instructor: Rae Andre
Wednesday Session Dates: February 26, March 4, 11, 18, 25, 9:30am – 11:30am

Registration for the course will begin only after the semester’s Kick-Off Reception on February 13 from 2:00 – 4:00pm. All are welcome to attend the reception! ($25/course for residents over 60 years old).

This class focuses on climate change and energy evolution and our personal and community reactions to these changes in our lives. Are you concerned about your family’s future under climate change? Do you want to stay informed about what’s happening? Do you want to contribute to solutions? This class explores the path forward.

The course opens with a summary of current scientific findings on the state of the planet and identifies the core problem as the burning of fossil fuels. It then moves quickly into material about how humanity is addressing this core problem. We will use a variety of approaches, including video case studies, personal reflections, mini-lectures, and guest speakers, to explore how change works and which strategies are likely to have the most impact on the climate crisis. Drawing on various social sciences, we will consider the most effective ways to foster sound decisions and broad-ranging solutions.
