There are three fall festivals coming up that will celebrate local farms, local food, local businesses and, of course, sustainability. Many of our member organizations will be at one, two or all three events!

October will also bring some excellent presentations and gatherings you will not want to miss, including a talk on a “Pathway to Zero Waste” from our State Representative Michelle Ciccolo.

The LFM will be hosting local sustainability groups and organizations focused on composting, zero waste and green transportation, while offering up community actions and opportunities that you can engage with right here in Lexington. It will be a great way to learn how you can contribute to a more sustainable future by supporting local food, farms and farmers' markets, take action to reduce your carbon footprint, and implement simple strategies to make a difference in your local community.

Gardens are habitats, but the degree to which they support local wildlife depends on how we plant and manage them. Our plant choices determine who visits, stays or passes by as creatures look for food and shelter to nest and lay eggs. When and how we decide to clean up leaves or cut plants back affects the life cycles of salamanders, bees, birds, moths and butterflies. Learn how to create habitat in the garden year-round while balancing your workload and garden aesthetics.

...to bring more native plants into your landscape and make your yard more wildlife-friendly? Lexington Living Landscapes has created two webpages full of resources to help:

- One is a list of Garden Design Professionals near Lexington with an expertise in native plants. Some have also indicated a willingness to spend an hour with a homeowner on their property, answering questions and offering advice, for a flat fee of $100 without expectation of further work.
- For Do-It-Yourselfers, we have also compiled a list of other resources, including garden templates, courses, Facebook groups, and other sources of assistance. Check them out!

In addition to lots of information, we’ll have seeds of pollinator-friendly native plants to share that we’ve harvested from Lexington gardens, and an “oak starter kit” for those who would like to plant an oak for the enormous contributions that oaks make to wildlife food chains. "Pathway to Zero Waste: State Policy and Practical Toolkits"

Two of Massachusetts’ Zero Waste champions, State Representative Michelle Ciccolo, Chair of the bipartisan Zero Waste Caucus, and Kirstie Pecci, Director of the Conservation Law Foundation’s Zero Waste Project, will lead us in conversation.
|
|
|
|
|
They will explain the imperative to reduce the waste that goes into incinerators and landfills. Each year, the burning and landfilling of this waste creates greenhouse gases and pollution, which often escapes into our environment, contaminating resources and harming human health and the health of our natural systems.
|
|
|
|
Come learn about the active initiatives at the state level as well as steps you can take through action and advocacy to decrease waste and create a healthier environment for all.

Building emissions are a major driver of global warming and account for one third of Lexington’s total carbon emissions. New development at Hartwell Ave, if built with conventional heating and cooling, could increase those emissions by as much as 40%. Join Cindy Arens of Clean Heat Lexington to learn about a new Citizens Petition to Town Meeting that would limit fossil fuel use at Hartwell Ave and help protect Lexington’s quest to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

CLC's Fall 2021 Walk Series

Citizen for Lexington Conservation returns with a full complement of in-person walks for the fall season.

Topics will include a bird walk, a photography walk, and an iNaturalist walk, in addition to an opportunity to join Lexington’s goatherd which browses at Chiesa Farm from time to time.
