As we enter the holiday season, we have much to be thankful for and much to offer.

In November, Lexington’s thoughtful and hardworking Town Meeting Members voted for warrant articles that will make our future commercial buildings cleaner to operate, solar energy easier to permit, and outlined a path to healthier and less polluting conditions for landscaping. There is much work yet to be done and we are up to the task!

December kicks off with a program about how our charitable giving can benefit the environment and our climate. All of our local organizations are full of wonderful programs and plans for 2022. The Lexington Green Network looks forward to hearing from you and learning more together in the New Year.

In This Issue – December 2021:

  • "Climate Change Philanthropy" Panel December 7th
  • Meet the Town's New Chief Equity Officer December 1st (Tonight)
  • LexFarm's Retail Sales Continue This Month
  • Space Available in "LexSORT" and "ZeroToGo" Pilots
  • Winter Cycling Workshop (January 18th) Registration Open
  • Donations Needed for Minuteman Bikeway Plowing

Climate Change Philanthropy: Giving Green, Giving Smart

Tuesday, December 7, 2021, 7:00-8:30PM
Virtual Event: Please REGISTER HERE
Giving Green
The Lexington Climate Action Network and the Cary Library will host four major climate change charities in an online forum December 7th 7:00- 8:30 p.m. EST.

In “Climate Change Philanthropy: Giving Green, Giving Smart", the Conservation Law Foundation, Earthjustice,
the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Sierra Club will describe their missions,
highlight their climate change initiatives, and field participant questions. These established NGOs take on regional, national, and even international climate concerns through policy initiatives, litigation, and cross-border networking.

They are all top charities as rated by Charity Navigator.

This event is a unique opportunity for concerned citizens to get an overview of how broad-reaching non-profits are addressing the climate crisis and how philanthropy plays a crucial role.
To address climate change and shape a livable, sustainable future for the planet, donors need to think globally, act locally, and give universally.

LexCAN December Meeting - December 1st at 7:00PM (tonight!)

Wednesday, December 1, 2021, 7:00PM
Click here to join on Zoom.
This month's meeting will feature a presentation by Martha Duffield, Lexington's Chief Equity Officer.

As Chief Equity Officer, Ms. Duffield is tasked with championing the Town’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. She will be working with the Town’s Senior Management Team and community leaders to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture in Lexington. She will be working to identify regular antiracism and social inclusion training opportunities for employees, boards, and committees. She also will be developing ways to engage the community in ongoing, meaningful dialogue about social and racial equity and inclusion.

Ms. Duffield will speak to us on how her work can be a resource to the efforts of the Sustainability Officer, SLC, and LexCAN. LexCAN's new mission and vision embraces equity and environmental justice as a focus. Bring your questions as there will be a Q&A after she speaks.
Feel free to invite anyone interested in the intersection between equity and climate change.

And Don't Forget to Celebrate Lexington's Recent Great Sustainability Successes

In our efforts to advance sustainability here in Lexington, there's always more work to do! But we should all take the time to enjoy the important recent successes, such as:
  • Article 17 - Sustainable Hartwell passed overwhelmingly at Town Meeting (177-4) with support from the Select Board, the Planning Board, the Board of Health and developers
  • The Programming team has held 2 major events (see videos: Time to Act and Pathways to Net Zero) and is always developing new and exciting topics for the wider community (next up: sign up for Philanthropy and Climate Change and spread the attached poster)
  • The Advocacy team has been tracking and advocating for passage of important Statewide and local initiatives
  • Sustainability Day at the Farmers' Market and Re-Discovery Day were very successful in reaching more folks to join LexCAN's efforts
  • LexCAN's website is in its final development phase and now we are able to update and keep it current
  • LexCAN meetings are bringing in new folks that care about climate change
  • And so much more!

Help FoLB Keep Lexington's Bikeways Plowed This Winter

FOLB
Winter is coming!

Minuteman Bikeway users have come to count on the bikeway being plowed right after each snowstorm!

Walkers, joggers and bike riders use the bike path throughout the winter, and in Lexington the plowed path is made possible by tax-deductible donations from users and others who love the bikeway.
For information on how you can help, see details at the Friends of Lexington Bikeways website: https://www.bike-lexington.org.
