The leaves are changing and temperatures are dropping - the next thing you know we'll be turning the clocks back!

Fall makes us think of cooler weather and warmer sweaters. Fall is also a great time to assess the best way to stay warm this winter, and next! New programs and economic incentives have arrived to evaluate and improve your home's insulation, and provide rebates for modern, all electric, heat pumps that can produce clean heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. If you have an old oil or natural gas heating system you can get up to $10,000 off on a new heating and cooling system. As you'll see in this month's newsletter, November has so many opportunities to learn and take action on behalf of our environment. The LPS Green Teams are joining up with the Town to provide a pumpkin drop off site with a twist! Lexington Living Landscapes and Cary Library host two arborists to talk to homeowners about caring for their trees. And don't forget to line your pantry with delicious local food for Thanksgiving and beyond at the Lexington Farmers' Market "FEASTival".

With all this and more we will just about be able to tolerate the shorter days and colder weather.

Wondering what you could be doing to keep your trees healthy? When to call an arborist, and how they can help? What to do if you’re concerned that a tree is threatening your house? How trees contribute to your family’s comfort and well-being and your home’s value? Join us for a wide-ranging conversation with two experienced arborists to discuss what every homeowner should know about their trees. We’ll save some time at the end for a period of audience Q-and-A. If you have trees on your property, or are thinking of planting one, this program is for you.

Stephen Vernon is a 12-year veteran of the tree industry. He is a Massachusetts Certified Arborist and International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist and serves on the Mass Arborists Association exam committee. With a passion for tree preservation, the outdoors, and human connection, Stephen has been with Harrison McPhee Inc. for 8 years. In that time he has served in multiple roles including climbing arborist, plant health care expert, and currently as Team Lead of Operations.

Greg Mosman comes to Barrett Tree Service East Inc. after a long career as the City Arborist/Tree Warden for the City of Boston, where he oversaw the care and management of Boston’s urban forest including 40,000 street trees and the Historic Parks of the Emerald Necklace. A Massachusetts Certified Arborist, Past President of the Massachusetts Arborists Association, and qualified by the International Society of Arboriculture in Tree Risk Assessment, Greg is passionate about trees and the environment.

Join local birder John Andrews to explore the autumn variety of ducks and other waterfowl that may be found at the Arlington Reservoir, which straddles the Arlington/Lexington border. In addition to migrant duck species, there may be migrant sparrows to find at the pond’s border with LexFarm. More than light rain will cancel the walk. Meet in the reservoir’s new lot on Lowell St.

Walk off some of those Thanksgiving calories with a tour of Willard’s Woods and Chiesa Farm. Meet at the Willard's Woods parking lot on North St. opposite 38 North St. The route will wind through the meadows and woodland on the Willards Woods property, through the Diamond Middle School parking area, and then through Chiesa Farm before looping back to the starting point. Steady rain cancels. Hiking poles maybe useful for some, especially if the ground is frozen.
