Lexington Climate Strike: September 20th!

Student-Led Lexington Climate Strike:
Friday, September 20, 10:00 am, LHS Football Field
**Adults may choose to meet at the Lexington Green at  9:30 am and walk to the LHS football field**

Many of you will have heard of the “Climate Strike” movement Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greta Thunberg started, with students all over the world striking from school to protest their governments’ lack of action against climate change. Climate change is the biggest issue of our time and all of us need to bring attention to it. September 20th is the first day of strikes planned for everyone: Students, adults, all concerned humans to join climate strikes all over the world. https://350.org/support-climate-strikes/

Come join us on September 20th, 10:00am, at the Lexington High School football field, to support our youth’s expression of alarm and demand for action, regarding our planets health due to climate change.

Below is a message from one of the Climate Strike Leaders:

My name is Grace Yang. I’m 14 years old and the co-organizer of the Lexington Climate Strike.

Climate change is rightly called the biggest issue of our time. When my generation grows up, we will face a disaster like never before with heat waves, floods, droughts, food shortages, and much more.

On September 20th, kids and adults all around the world will walk out of school and work to protest for climate action. Lex Climate Strike is part of this international movement, so we’re going to be showing the government we want a future.

People keep saying that activism never changes anything. This isn’t true—How did women get the right to vote? By protesting. Climate activism has already made a difference —The European Investment Bank, the world’s largest public lender, published a new draft policy that would stop funding fossil fuels after 2020. They said themselves that climate activism was part of their decision.

Governments and corporations have been careless and my generation shouldn’t have to pay the price. Thanks for helping us fight for climate action, which affects us the most.

(The app may be found at: https://www.inaturalist.org/ . It’s free but may require registration on the iNaturalist web site.) Plants will be the focus (since they are easiest to photograph) but we’ll look at other organisms as available. Meet at the Winchester Drive entrance opposite Berkshire Drive. Please park on Berkshire Drive as space in the parking lot is limited. Heavy rain cancels.

Lexington Public Schools Green Teams:

Looking for a way to ‘recycle’ more of your waste AND help out your local public school? Mention your local Lexington public school name in the referral section when you sign up for curbside pick-up from Black Earth Compost HERE – and that school’s PTO/A will receive a $10 donation!

You can choose a monthly program for $9.99 or an annual program for $99, that’s only $8 per month! To show support for composting, the Town of Lexington is providing a free 13 gallon wheeled locking-lid bin to those who sign up for any compost pickup service. Black Earth’s commercial composting facility takes many things that aren’t appropriate for a backyard compost bin (meat, bones, dairy, cooked foods, pizza boxes, and certain types of compostable “plastics”).

Trash in Lexington is incinerated, causing air pollution and toxic byproducts. Composting recycles nutrients back to the soil for use by local farmers and gardeners, and ultimately into the produce you eat. And customers get a bag of free compost in the spring! Help the environment and your local public school today!
